Criterion D my podcast
Hey whats up party animals out there. Im Bilegt and im going to be talking about partying and drinking in Mongolia. I dont know what you heard about Mongolia but its not that bad when it comes to partying. People think its a country in the middle if nowhere with no place to go, however, ill prove them wrong.
First of all, i would like to make myself clear that im talking about clubbing and dancing, like on friday nights, not just normal daytime birthday parties.
So, a brief intro to clubs in UB, thats the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, UB for short. Anyways, there are lots of places to go but there are only a few which are really popular, meaning they are packed with people. So those ones are such as Metropolis, Oasis and Strings etc. Ok, enough of random club names, lets get down to business. I interviewed 7 people, all teenagers, and, so lets hear about their clubbing experiences.
I asked 6 questions from each individual, those questions are:
1) How often do you go out
2) Do you go out on weekdays
3) Do you drink when you go out
4) Do your parents know
5) Do you go to only one place or alternate?
6) Do you go out because you enjoy it or peer pressure?
(Talk about the answers and give personal opinions, and compare with other answers. This part is long so i skipped it)
Ok, those were pretty usual answers. I myself dont go out clubbing so i might answer all of them no. I think the parents' opinion about their children clubbing varies from culture to culture. For example, asian people are usually really strict, and they beat their kids up, i am not saying all asians do that, but thats what i think, usually in movies and stuff the parents are pretty strict. When in western culture, parents are usually laid-back or they focus more about their work and less about their children. I know im kind of sterotyping people, no offense, but thats what i think. That might a reason why people from different cultures have different opinions about clubbing. Well , look at time, i gotta wrap this thing up. If you would like to share your clubbing experienes or thoughts if youre from another country, i would be happy to hear your podcast. See you all later.

I choose to do the topic about partying/drinking because i feel like it is the topic that has the most thing to talk about. Even though I dont go out partying and getting wasted and stuff, i have friends who do and who talk about it a lot so i know what I am going to talk about. I am going to make a voice not a video podcast because its much more simple. Videoing requires some materials such as lighting, smaller mics etc which can be hard to find. Plus, videos take longer to load or download than just audio. Having audio can be more comfortable because when videoing we all worry about how we look etc. After recording my podcast, i am going to add background music through windows movie maker. Having background music makes podcasts much more interesting to hear than just someone talking all the time. After finished with all the editing process, i will upload my podcast to www.podomatic.com. This site is very simple with easy-to-use tools and you can easily find different podcasts.

Criterion A my podcast
In this unit, we are to create our own podcasts about our lives. We must choose a topic to talk about, record it, and post it to our blogs. We can talk about any topic that is related to adolescence. This unit is important because we are all teens, and there are many things we are in common and different. I believe we should listen to podcasts or other teens from different backgrounds and listen to their opinions of what it is like being a teen.
First off, we are listening to other podcasts on the net and writing about it.
-Fisher, Bruce. "Hawaii Vacation for Toddlers". 20/11/2009: #349. Hawaii Vacation Connection. 25/11/2009.
In this podcast, a man and his wife talk about Hawaii, what you can do there and recommend some sights, hotels and places to visit. Mostly, they answer the questions that their listeners ask. In this episode, a family said that they cant swim, they cant eat eggs and seafood. And the two had trouble solving that because basically in Hawaii, swimming is the basic thing you need. And Hawaii has the best seafood in the world. However they recommended hiking and other things that they could do. I think the podcast was very good, nice background music, very clear audio and they way he talks was just fun to hear. And he also gave very good information about Hawaii. They make podcasts every Wednesday and Friday and they have their own website that gives discount packages.
-Parent, Scott. "American Cliche Podcast". #213. 29/11/2009.
This podcast sounds as if it is a news-type serious thing, but it is actually a comedy podcast. The host Scott, talks about almost anything and makes funny comments about them. It does contain some explicit language but nothing too serious. I like it because this guy has a great sense on humor, and makes hilarious criticisms now and then in the podcast. I searched for 'funny podcasts' on Google and then i found this podcast. He makes one episode every week and was first created in 2006.
-Kelley, Brian. "QuickTips". 25/11/2009. #22. nlnnet. 29/11/2009.
The title explains it all. In this podcast the host gives some very short and helpful tips about computers and the internet that can help your modern everyday life. In this episode, he gives info about a site "cli.gs" which shortens very long URLs and it can track who is entering that site. I found this podcast by searching "short podcasts" on Google because i was bored of listening to long ones. This podcast is only about a minute long.
Creating a podcast isnt very difficult, you just need a microphone, recording software and the internet. There are many different sites that you can upload your podcasts such as mypodcast.com; podomatic.com; podcastalley.com; podcastlinks.com etc.
Test: What do you think the purpose of my podcast was?

Fictional teen living in UB
He is a 17 year old boy, with no history of importance. He is a typical poor boy, but has wild dreams. He likes leading people, been to only 1-5 th grades.
"I do whatever it takes to live and survive. My ger district isn’t one of the worst ones, it pretty close to the city than the other districts. There are 4 of us in my family: me, my father, my mother and my little brother. I really don’t like my father; whenever he finds money he spends it on alcohol and stuff. I don’t like the way my dad acts when he’s drunk, so I am never going to become a drunk. Instead, I will use that money to buy food and other things we need. That’s what I actually do now. I find the money for our family to survive. How I find money is actually pretty easy; I am the big boy around here, and everyone kind of works for me. They give me whatever money they find, and I protect them from other hooligan kids. I think they were pretty convinced when I gave them that speech about danger in these places. My brother is my right hand side. He goes wherever I go, and always helps me with whatever i do. We work together to feed our family. I feel very sorry for my mom, always getting beat up by my father. One time I confronted him but he knocked me out. Its really hard to call ‘father’ now. But ive lived like this for a long time so I don’t really pay attention to him now. Every day we go get water, and its really hard pulling the water uphill. Me and my brother take turns pulling it. After that, we gather up wood for burning. It’s really hard to find wood here now, so we usually buy them. It’s a shame buying a natural resource, when we could just go out and get it. Then we just continue digging a hole, in case if our old toilet gets filled up. I don’t really find the rich people as bad people, theyre just people like me and my brother. They just have more resources for their wealth and they were born from a wealthy family. Our family has no history. My dream is to make the ger district a better place to live, and help all the poor people when I grow up. I hope this comes true, my dad always tell me that I will never succeed at anything, just like him."

"I Had to Work, Because if I Didn’t, There Wouldn’t Be Food on the Plate"

RIGHT now, life is confusing and a little stressful. This is the age that a lot of people consider you a young adult. That means a lot of responsibilities, a lot of depending on yourself and not on your parents.
Since my mom is divorced and unemployed, she has her hands full with my younger sister, who is 15, and my baby sister, who was born in 2004. I helped her out with the rent. It was around $900 a month. I would make $400 and change. I paid $300 for rent and $100 for groceries.
The job that I had was with my grandfather working after school and on weekends in a bike rental shop in Central Park. My grandfather needed help and he doesn’t trust people, so he’d rather have his family with him. Basically, I would repair bikes, make sure that they are returned, and give bike tours. For a time I liked it, but I wanted bigger and better things, so I stopped. I worked from when I was 15 until January of this year.
My mom had a lot of bills back then. I have two older brothers; they already grew up, and my three older sisters moved out and have their own families. At that time, it was just me, my mother and my two little sisters. All of my paycheck would be for food and rent.
I really didn’t care. I wasn’t very materialistic. I was the man of the house. I was raised in a Christian house and my mom has Christian rules and Christian morals. Material things, clothes and things like that, are the least we should worry about, because when we go to heaven, we’re not going to have any of those things, and we’re not going to worry about them.
Right now, my dad is in prison. I really don’t know why, but what they told me is that they found him with a big amount of drugs.
I looked up to him. Half of my morals I got from him. He was a hard-working man, sweet and kind, and he had a good heart. If anybody on the block needed food or money or anything, it didn’t matter if he had to pay bills the next week, he gave it to them.
He’s been locked up for the past four years in upstate New York. I don’t know where exactly. I visited him two years ago. That’s when I got the courage to be the man of the house, because no one else was present at the time.
I was an honor student until I got to high school. Unfortunately, I started hanging out with the wrong crew, and education-wise I started going downhill. I started cutting class. I was having all of these personal issues, family issues. School at the time wasn’t the last thing in my head, but it wasn’t as important as wrestling and work. Work at the time was a duty. I had to work, because if I didn’t, there wouldn’t be food on the plate. Wrestling is just my passion.
I’m into freestyle wrestling. It’s been my passion since I was little. I started when I was 8. I like the adrenaline. I love the attention and I love seeing the smiles. The sport at first seems brutal and the people violent and unprofessional, but when you train for it, you learn that it’s all about finesse and precision and that it’s a very serious sport. There’s also acting involved. They call me Vargas. I’m part of a tag-team called SPIC. It’s an acronym for Spanish Political International Cartel.
I want to be a professional wrestler. I make $40 an hour with SPIC, but it’s only one show a month and I still need another job. I have that dream to take my wrestling to an arena in Manhattan or somewhere big. My other goal is to get enough money to buy a center where anyone who’s interested could train for free, to give back to the community.
Recently, my aunt bought a house down in Kissimmee, Fla. My mom decided to move there because everything is cheaper down there and it’s more economical. I decided to go in April because it was better for me educationally and to help her out, because she needed a man of the house. I came back after a month. It’s a nice place, but it’s not my home.
I’m staying with my sister right now. She’s helping me out, but in a way I’m helping her out too. She’s 23 and she’s a single mother; she has a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old. She works nights at the front desk of a hotel in Manhattan, so I baby-sit and she gives me like 20 or 40 bucks. Tomorrow she has to go work, so she’ll leave at 5 or 6 p.m. and I’ll pick up the kids from day care, take them home, feed them, bathe them, whatever.
I’m looking for a job. I’m really good with my hands, so I’m looking for a job in maintenance or something like that. I’m trying to go back to high school, but since I already left this year, I didn’t finish the year because I was officially discharged, so going back now would be a total waste of time. Either I take the G.E.D., which I really don’t want to do, or I go back to Florida and try and get my own place and finish school there.
I could make a novel out of my life. I don’t even know what I would call it, but my life has been crazy, let’s put it that way.
Brady, Emily. "I Had to Work, Because if I Didn’t, There Wouldn’t Be Food on the Plate." The New York Times. The New York Times, Web. 3 Nov 2009.
This kid inspires me because i wonder how hard it must be to be the man of the house and working hard to feed his family.
In this unit, our final project is to make our own podcast. This unit is important to us because all teens have different views and opinions so it is a

Criterion A
Investigation was the hardest to do, for me, because we had to write down everything we know about this unit: such as how we edited the photos, why does it have to express myself etc. Compared to others, mine is somewhat shorter. I am not a person who is crazy about word count, but it looks unintelligent if it looks short. However, this is not the shortest thing i wrote in my life, i believe i wrote all the necessary things and some additional stuff such as : what is a portrait. I am satisfied of what i wrote for criterion A and have no need to change it. The only problem is that we had a short amount of time to write it in class, plus i have no internet connection at my house so i couldn't do it at home.
Criterion B
For criterion B i altered 5 photos, talked a little about it and evaluated it against my design specifications. This was the most fun part of the unit because we tested with different kinds of filters with our photos using various sites such as -picnik.com -flauntr.com -splashup.com etc. I mostly used picnik.com because it was the most easiest. The others required to download something or demanded my email address. Each of the designs i made represents my interests and i am satisfied with all the results because to also looks very good. However, i used photoshop for my final design because i have been using photoshop for a long time and i am very comfortable with it. Photoshop is used for professional photo editing with dozens of tools, but the online editors made it a lot simple with just a few tools and easy to use filters.
Criterion D
I dont think i wrote enough about my process of making the portrait. It was really hard to actually recall what you did on what day and stuff. From the beginning i should have took notes in art class about what i did in that particular day, which most people did, but i had no idea we should've. Therefore, i couldnt write with enough detail of what i did. I think that my presentation was pretty good, i talked about all the materials i used, hidden meaning, process and all the things i had to talk about. I am only unhappy about my test. My original test was to ask students and tell only one word about me by looking at my portrait, but not a word about the portrait itself. After everyone gave one word i was going to compare it to my own word, which was ' i suck at art'. But during my presentation Mrs. Wilson got me by saying that it isnt one word which I never thought about. I also didnt have enough time to ask students, i only asked 2 and they said: random, interesting. So in my opinion my test was a failure. Anyways my classmates are too nice to say 'you suck at art'.

The Process
The materials i am going to use are magazine cut-outs, grass, paint and colored pencils. I painted the background with the 7 colors of the rainbow, which shows i like colors, and then pasted magazine cut-outs, which represents my interests, such as cars, dogs etc. I used the grass as my hair which expresses my appreciation for nature. However, i didn't collect enough grass therefore my hair looks really dumb. I wanted to use string or yarn as my hair but i don't have long hair, and also someone else was using yarn as her hair so i didn't want to copy it. I could've covered the whole background with mag cut-outs but it is really arduous to look for certain things in a magazine, because most of the magazine are text and news.
I spread the white glue over my hair and stick all the grass evenly. The cool thing is that the grass dried out and turned yellow, which shows that my hair is blondish (but it is light brown). The only thing is that there wasn't enough grass to cover the top of my head. After all the gluing and pasting i painted my face with colored pencils. My face is the most "ugly" part because it looks very fat and different from me, plus i don't know how to color "good" like professionals do. My face doesn't have enough definition so it looks really plain and light.
The project in general is very exciting and fun, but because of the lack of my artistic skills, i ended up ruining my portrait. I don't feel very bad about it but it is depressing to have a finished portrait that doesnt look as good, and I was dumbfounded by everyone else's portraits. This project gave me insight to how art can be much more creative if you use different things. It isn't only about pencils and paint, art is anything. We are lucky because we are using good thick paper as of last year's 10th graders used very thin paper and they all wrinkled up and were just bad.
My portrait took 3 double period classes to finish, and i was one of the ones that finished earliest, but still need to write my reflection. Ms. Sudra gave me a lot of help during the process by giving me examples, showing me how to do a certain stuff and what i could do. I applied her advice to my portrait but still my portrait looks very simple and ugly. But i don't think the product is very important but my enthusiasm and work attitude is, and those are the areas that will be graded.
The Product
The product looks nothing like what I've been expecting. At first i thought that my finished artwork would look very unique and interesting but it turned out being a disasterpiece.

-Evaluate it in terms of your design specifications
Original Photo
This is a portrait of myself i took at home. The pictures of me that were taken during class time could not be found in the grade 10 folder so i had no idea other than taking a photo myself.Design 1

This is my first altered photo, i simply just increased the saturation and hue which makes a nice glowing effect. I really like this picture because of the way my face is pointing out (with increased brightness), and glowing pictures look really cool. But i would not choose it as my final design because it would take some time tracing it on paper. It is better to trace a simple photo and then design it anyway i want in art class.
Design 2

This is probably my favorite altered photo because it looks like a pencil sketch, and looks really realistic, if it was a pencil sketch. I used Picnik.com to alter this photo and used a filter called sketch. There is also the same effect on photoshop but not as good looking as this one, plus this site is free! Of course photoshop is the best photo editing because it has a lot of tools for editing than just adding effects or filters like most online photo editors. I am not going to choose this as my final design because it does not meet the design specifications, even though i like it. Instead i might use it as my Facebook photo or something.
Design 3

This design looks really cool on a computer, but on paper it might not, because it wont show the same effect when i trace it on paper. I used a filter called 'Neon' on Picnik.com This expresses my likeness for digital lights or so called 'neon' lights. Neon lights can bee seen anywhere: bars, disco clubs, ad posters and even cars. It is used as a decoration, but only can be seen at night or when it is dark. I would not use this design because it is hard to trace when projected on paper because there are complex lines on my hair and on my eyes, which tells us that it doesn't meet the required design specifications.
Design 4

This design was also edited on Picnik.com. It looks like its been painted with water colors but it looks really dull because it used colors like brown and gray. This really doesn't express me because i like colorful things, not dull. Therefore, this portrait is out of my list for tracing, it doesn't meet the design specifications and i just don't like it.
Design 5

This is my final design and the one im using for tracing. Its true that i dont like dull things, as said above, but i do like plain things like this one. This design meets all the design specifications, it expresses me, easy to trace and simple. It was altered in Photoshop through a filter called 'cut-out', and it really does look like cut-out.

After we've edited our photos we are supposed to outline them on a blank sheet of paper and design it any way we want using many different materials, items and colors.
The main aim of this unit is to express yourself the way you never expressed before, which is through a mixed media portrait. By doing this unit you can also learn about yourself. You can discover unknown hobbies and things you like you didn't know before. This unit helps us develop and expand our creativeness and imagination.
About Portraits:
Portraits are a type of art where someone must be in the picture and the face is and expression is predominant. Portraits can express the feeling, personality and the mood. Portraits can be done in any media: paintings, snapshots, sculptures and in any other art form. People drew portraits for a very long time and is still a popular choice in art today. Self-portrait is another type of portrait where the artist draws him or herself in the mirror or something else.
There were some troubles when trying to look at our pictures we took. The thumbnail of the pictures didn't match the actual picture file, and by that i couldn't find my portrait so i had to take a picture at home.
Here is the original photo and the altered photo

In art class we watched a video about a artist named Vik Muniz from Brazil, and his artworks. He usually makes his art with unique materials rather than the typical pencil and paint. He uses strings, yarns, sugar, chocolate, cotton fluffs and real clouds. For the works he did with yarn, he calls it pictures of thread, and he named some of them on how much yarn he used.
The product has to express yourself. It has to show what kind of person you are. For example: A student named Chung Hwan who did this unit last year, does not like his photo taken, so he completely covered his face so you cant even say its a face. Another girl drew numbers dropping from her hair, which tells us she loved numbers and math. You can express yourself in any way you want, through a collage, using different media (pencil, colored pencils, paint etc.), mag and newspaper cut-outs, beads and jewelry, rice and beans etc. The thing is to be creative as possible, but still expressing yourself.
This unit is linked with Human Ingenuity of the AOIs because we are creating something. Human Ingenuity is quite an important AOI because we should be using our mentality in order to create things that will be beneficial towards us and represent who we are.
